Ponsonby Primary School is a multi platform and future focused school. Digital technology is an important aspect of preparing our children to participate, create and thrive in this fast-moving digital world. Here at Ponsonby Primary we are redefining learning and achievement through the use of digital technology by developing confidence and skill in the use of various digital technologies by increasing student engagement, global readiness and most importantly developing digital citizenship.

All teachers in every classroom at Ponsonby Primary understand the importance of balance between traditional learning (reading, writing and maths using books, paper and pencils) and the use of digital technology. This means students will only be on devices anywhere from 1-3 hours per week (however this can vary greatly due to EOTC, sports events and arts to name a few). As educators, we ensure we teach our children the appropriate digital skills and digital citizenship values from Year 1 onwards. We also ensure our children are using devices ergonomically by providing ergonomic surroundings with the use of flexible learning spaces and teaching them about screen time, viewing distances, seat and height posture etc.

You'll find these posters, which are used as part of deliberate lessons, on all classroom walls at Ponsonby Primary.

BYOD at Ponsonby Primary

In 2018 there will be very minimal classroom devices available for those children without their own device. BYOD isn't new here at PPS, we've been on this journey for over ten years. Therefore we highly encourage all students in Years 3-6 to bring their own device to school each day. The Year 2's will be part of 1:1 iPad program called Towards Transformation this year (more information below).

Device Recommendations Only

Year 1: Students will have access to school owned tablets (Not BYOD)

Year 2:
iPad - this iPad will move with the children into Years 3 onwards

(must be updated with IOS 11 - can either be purchased brand new on our school portal on the front page of the website or a refurbished iPad Air 5th Generation with charger, cable and original box with 6 month warranty from $320 - $339 incl GST through one of our lovely parents, please email Jimmy: sales@xtremesystems.co.nz)
A reminder that we do have limited devices we can use in year 2 so parent support is greatly appreciated.

Year 3 - 6: Chromebook or Windows Laptop or MacBook (iPads are not yet recommended at this level as teachers are undergoing professional development with the Year 2 children - iPads will be recommended as an option from 2019 onwards)

If you are considering purchasing a device for your child in year 4-6, we suggest a Windows laptop or MacBook but a Chromebook is just as efficient for everyday learning through Google and its various apps for education. It really depends on how much you are wanting to spend and what skills you would like your child to gain.

Year 2: Towards Transformation Information

Ponsonby Primary School has been selected to take part in a digital learning programme where teachers and children learn together with an Apple educator. The programme is called ‘Towards Transformation’. Glen, our highly experienced and skilled Apple educator, will work alongside the Year 2 teachers and most importantly students, in order to take student learning to the next level using digital technology.

Teachers will identify learning needs for their students for example; increasing writing engagement, supporting metacognition and thinking skills in Maths or creating film/music to support literacies. Our Apple educationalist will then work alongside teachers and students to achieve the learning goals. To do this we need every Year 2 student with an IOS 11 capable iPad.

You can purchase or bring an iPad you may already have at home as long it is updated to iOS 11 (if you’re unsure, please just pop into the e-hub and Michala will check it for you). You can purchase a brand new iPad at a good price from our BYOD portal on the school website or through our purchasing portal:

One of our dads from Xtreme Systems has a great deal on refurbished iPads for $399.00. You can email him on
sales@xtremesystems.co.nz and he can have the machine delivered to school.

Your child’s iPad will move with them through the school and become a key part of their learning well into Year 3 onwards. You will not need another computer for at least 3 years and that is only because technology is always improving.

The heart of this fantastic project is about moving your child’s learning to the next level with the effective use of e-learning on an iPad. With the support of our Apple consultant, Michala Sauerbier and the fantastic Year 2 teachers, we are sure to be successful and continue to make Ponsonby Primary one of the best e-learning schools in the country.

If you have any concerns or worries please do not hesitate to contact Michala Sauerbier or Anne Malcolm by phone or email to set up a meeting.
